Psychometric tests

This seven-item scale was administered twice during the study. It captures three core components of burnout previously identified by researchers such as Christina Maslach and Susan Jackson at the University of California, Berkeley: exhaustion, lack of accomplishment and callousness.

On each scale respondents circle a single number to indicate their level of agreement with a particular statement.

  • I feel energetic
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

  • I feel I am working too hard
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

  • I feel I accomplish many worthwhile things in my work
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

  • I feel frustrated
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

  • I don’t really care what happens to the Guards any more
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

  • I don’t really care what happens to the Prisoners any more
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

  • I feel I am becoming callous towards people
         do not agree at all   1    2    3    4    5    6    7    agree completely

To calculate a mean score, responses on the above 7 scales are added up, after first reverse scoring responses to the third item. This sum is then divided by 7.

The scores of participants on Days 2 and 6 of the BBC Prison Study are presented in the resources section of this Website.
